Abstract

The blacktip shark Carcharhinus limbatus and the sandbar shark C. plumbeus are reported for the first time from off the Balearic Islands. Identification of both specimens was based on jaw and dentition analysis. These records extend the known distribution of these species in the Mediterranean. Their occurrence and abundance in the area, especially in the north-western basin, is discussed.
