One specimen of Gonostoma elongatum Günther, 1878 (Stomiiformes, Gonostomatidae) was caught off the Sicilian coast (Italy) by bottom trawl between 600 and 700 m depth. Morphometric and meristic character values are reported. This is the first record of this mesopelagic fish in central Mediterranean (southern Tyrrhenian Sea). The hypothesis of its immigration from the Atlantic Ocean is discussed.
