Résumé

A new record of the Gudgeon, Butis gymnopomus (Bleeker, 1853), was reported during an ichthyological survey in Sri Lanka. In Sri Lanka, this species was previously confused with B. butis. B. gymnopomus is easily distinguished from all reported congeners from Sri Lanka by the combination of the following characters: snout and interorbital region naked, absence of axillary scales, presence of prominent lower jaw, absence of bony crests on snout, lacking black spot on pectoral fin base and lacking dark cheek stripes.
