In an annotated checklist of the family Labridae, Parenti and Randall (2000) noted that Pseudolabrus psittaculus (Richardson, 1840), described from Tasmania, is preoccupied by Labrus psittaculus Lacepède, 1801 [=Halichoeres bivittatus (Bloch 1791)], a Caribbean species, and proposed the next available name, Labrichthys rubicunda Macleay, 1881, be used for this species. Based on its purported type-locality, and in the absence of the type-specimen, Pseudolabrus rubicundus was rejected as a nomen dubium by Allen et al. (2006) who instead referred P. psittaculus to another junior synonym, Labrichthys mortoni Johnston, 1885. Rediscovery of the type-specimen of Labrichthys rubicunda Macleay, however, confirms the conspecificity of this species with Labrus psittaculus Richardson, and the original collection information shows Tasmania, rather than Western Australia, is the actual type-locality. We therefore resurrect Pseudolabrus rubicundus as the next available name for the preoccupied P. psittaculus.
