New maximum lengths for the freshwater blenny (Salaria fluviatilis Asso, 1801) and length comparison between continental and island rivers
Basic text books and fish databases suggest that the freshwater blenny has a maximum size of 150 mm (total length). However, no report of any measure of freshwater blenny longer than 111.8 (standard length) were found in the scientific literature. In this study, we propose a list of longer blennies, found in 52 sites distributed over 8 countries in order to document this life history trait of the species. The list was established from different databases and a literature survey on the subject. Overall, our results show that the longest blenny measured to date is 137 mm and was sampled in the Fium Orbu River, Corsica (France). Moreover, our results suggest that Corsican rivers support longer specimens than continental ones.
