The brown meagre, Sciaena umbra, is a slow-growing and long-lived species highly coveted by spearfishers. Hunting pressure has reduced the size of populations and has led to a reduction in the number of large individuals except for those associated with marine reserves. In 2014, and in response to this decline, a fishing ban was put in place to protect this species along the French coast. This study presents data from a 31 year-old female poached in the Scandola marine reserve. This individual is the oldest of its species reported in the literature.
