Résumé

Gerres infasciatus Iwatsuki & Kimura, 1998 is recorded from the southern Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf for the first time. Species included in the G. filamentosus complex (G. filamentosus, G. infasciatus and G. macracanthus) from the same general region were re-examined with emphasis on their distribution. Analysis of the phylogenetic relationships of the complex indicated that specimens from the Middle East, including the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf, long identified as G. filamentosus, were in fact G. infasciatus, implying that the former is unlikely to be distributed in that region. New distributional information for G. infasciatus indicates that the species is likely to occur only along the coast of the northern Indian Ocean (including the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf) and Thailand. A key is provided for the species of this complex.
