Résumé

The present study expands the range of Piabucus dentatus to the Pindaré River drainage of the Mearim River basin, Maranhão State, northeastern Brazil. The geographic distribution of this species was previously known only from the coastal drainages of the Paria Gulf in Venezuela to south of the mouth of the Amazon River. This is the first record of this species and of the genus Piabucus for this region, an extension of about 400 km southeastward. We also present meristic data of the specimens and discuss diagnostic characters of the species.
