The original description of the genus Chondrostoma is short and inadequate to differentiate it clearly from related genera. Therefore, a new diagnosis and description based on the main osteological and external morphological features is offered. After surveying forty-six taxa within Chondrostoma, it is concluded that the genus consists of only sixteen species with twenty-four subspecies; among these, a new species an three new subspecies are described.
