A short note on the terminal nerve in Callorhinchus milii (Callorhinchidae, Holocephali, Chondrichthyes)
Recently, the terminal nerve has been described for holocephalan fishes in more detail. But this nerve was described only in two species (Hydrolagus colliei and Chimaera monstrosa), which represent just the most derived family (Chimaeridae) of extant holocephalans. This study completes the former account and for the first time describes the nervus teminalis in a late embryonic elephant shark (Callorhinchus milii) on the basis of a serially sectioned specimen. The course of the terminal nerve in C. milii resembles that of other holocephalans and it is assumed that the more ventral and median course is the basic pattern for extant Holocephali and possibly for gnathostomes.
