Résumé

A larger number of specimens of the genus Polyacanthonotus has been studied, enabling a provisional review of the genus. From Atlantic specimens studied, a new species, Polyacanthonotus merretti, is described. This new bathyal species has been captured on both sides of the North Atlantic (below 40°N) between 594-2000 m. The name P. africanus is a junior synonym of P. challengeri, a circumglobal (mostly above 30°N or S) abyssal species (1302-3753 m). The taxonomic integrity of P. rissoanus remains in question. A provisional key to species of the genus is presented.
