Despite its probable ancient introduction, the knowledge about tench (Tinca tinca) in Sicily is still inadequate. The only recent data can be found in studies on the distribution of freshwater fish in some areas of the island (namely the Eastern and South-Eastern sides) and consist mainly on presence/absence data, sometimes with an abundance estimate. The management of the populations is not based on biological and ecological information. This study reports historical and recent available data and outlines the researches needed to obtain a deeper scientific knowledge on the different local populations with the aim of a better management and conservation.
