Five specimens of the Atlantic herring Clupea harengus were caught in the north of Spain (Galicia and Asturias waters) during the last years. The identification of two preserved specimens was done considering morphometric and meristic characters and was confirmed by DNA barcoding. These catches represent the first records for Galicia and Asturias marine waters and they are the southernmost records from the Northeastern Atlantic Ocean. The occurrence of this species in the southern part of the Atlantic Ocean could be related to climatic events.
