The taxonomic stata of the West African gobiid species Nematogobius maindroni (Sauvage) and Nematogobius ansorgii Boulenger are revised by direct observation of the type specimens and reference to the type descriptions. Previous confusion of longitudinal series scale counts for the species are clarified. On the basis of morphology, the taxa are considered conspecific. N. ansorgii is synonymised with N. maindroni. The distribution of N. maindroni is briefly stated.
