Abstract

Selar crumenophthalmus, the bigeye scad, is a coastal pelagic fish, which feeds mostly at night on large planktonic animals. Young scads prey mostly on crustaceans (euphausiids, decapods) and adults are active predators of fish larvae and early juveniles. The large size of the eyes could be an adaptation to night predation.
